Dear Don: Mister Fox…

Mister FoxDear Don,

Well, that was a weekend and a half! Even though, as always, it ended way too soon. What a wonderful way to end it though…It began with seeing the poster for our Mister Fox book And ended with the Foxes themselves!  And you can read the whole of the Rubáiyát now too, instead of having me quote verses piecemeal.

I did check the etymology of ‘kettle’… you are out of luck, it does not…officially at least… share an origin with ‘catch’. Your turban was more interesting; one of the biblical terms for it also denotes a diadem…which may originally have been just a wrapping, but has come to mean so much more.

I’m inclined to agree about the motion of the heavens. Civilisation does need ‘a star to sail by’ after all. We have talked often enough of those who, before the advent of more earthbound technologies, would have simply gazed up in wonder and watched the procession of the heavenly bodies as they crossed the blackness of an unpolluted sky. How could they not wonder? And observing their dance, extend the notion of time itself out across their perception.

I wonder how much our desire to grasp the intricacies of that dance has caught our attention, pulling it away from the contemplation of that vastness and pinning it firmly to earth through our debates and our logic? What would it take, now, to be able to lift up our eyes and only marvel? Perhaps, if we could, the body of light would find its becoming a simpler path.

The sloughing of the serpent’s skin… seems to accord well with the spiritual journey, doesn’t it? The shedding of the ego, perhaps… or the shedding of attachment to who we think we are. I have a feeling that may come back up again, you know.

The journey back was not the most pleasant with the spray on the roads and I am feeling a bit weary. I await the return of the Beast and have duly lined up the tennis balls. I am tempted to eat before the arrival of the Ravenous One… I might actually get to eat the whole thing myself for once…ani cleaning 009
