The Iron Bar…

Above and below the heavens,

we are blind, deaf and dumb,

beyond all reach of contrivance.

How ludicrous and disheartening!

The man with the sharpest eye

misses the jewel on the ocean-bed.

The man with the keenest ear

does not recognise the unplayed symphony.

The man with the most eloquent tongue

cannot expound the great mystery.

What life compares with sitting by a window?

Here, we watch leaves fall and flowers bloom…

Seeing not-seeing.

Hearing not-hearing.

Preaching not-preaching.

When hungry we eat, when tired we sleep.

Let the leaves fall, let the flowers bloom…

Autumn we know and Spring too.

Do you understand?

An iron-bar without a hole.
