How many fish?

*

The king was on a tour of inspection of his lands.

He saw an old man fishing in a lake, “How many fish today?” asked the king.

“None today,” said the old man, “And none yesterday.”

“Then, better luck tomorrow,” said the king.

“I don’t fish to catch fish,” said the old man.

“Then, what do you fish for?” asked the king.

“In order to amuse myself,” said the old man.

*

The king wished to employ the old man

in the administration of his government but feared to,

lest his own ministers should raise an objection.

*

On the other hand, he could not bear to think

of his people being deprived of such an influence…
