‘I… will be…’

***

Happy New Year… Assuming you made it… Glad you did… There’s no guarantee these days… Never was… Ever… Though that’s not normally the way we look at these things… Two of everything it was said… Sure enough there are two new years… One… Quite distinct and with a good number of firm-ish images… Lodged for all time in the annals of self-dom… The other… A bit vague… with only one cast-iron scene that could… Well, really… It could belong anywhere… Another of those unattached variants… which appear to be so troublesome to our control mechanism… We’ll start sure… And drift.

Auld Lang Syne… A long-time since… More literally… Old Long Since… Which makes me think this is actually a personification of Time… Time again… A pinch in the waist of continuity… Since, is now old, and long ago… Just like the past year in fact… Long before we had kings we had years… Of yore, as it were… Anyway… There we were… In a ring… And actually doing the hand-crossing thing… And that hand-crossing thing now also starts to take on immense significance… as does the rhythmical movement, up and down, of the linked hands… In time… Again… To the wily words of the song.

***

In short… A ritual… Nobody agreed to do it… It was just… The done thing… A done thing… Need to think about that one… A lot of magic ends with the phrase… It is done… See how powerful this is… Powerful enough to stay in the memory… Bodies in time and space… Linked through music and song and symbol… And emotion… At a juncture… Big word, juncture… In time… Why should this foster community?… Why should it not?… Not everyone, perhaps, who should have been there… Was there… Woz wasn’t… And some who were there… Really ought not to have been… Which is curious.

We'd love to hear from you...
