Arthur…

***

Mog’s family were Scots… And have their own tartan… He now looks like a Scotsman… On all the photos… Should have seen it sooner… The other… Takeaway… Is that… Everyone looks smaller… They’re not… In most cases… They’re all a lot bigger… But they look smaller… It’s a bit like going back to an old haunt… Does the memory also inflate… And expand things… It’s possible that it is not simply the memory… But the psyche as a whole… Which does that… Granting and witholding… Stature… But why should it?… What possible advantage is there in such a function?

The demon-kings in Monkey… Can all shape-shift… That’s how they get away with being kings… And Manannan mac Lir… Assumes the form of his lover’s husband in order to sleep with her… If that particular ruse seems familiar… It is because it was borrowed from the Irish tale…  And used in the Arthurian mythos… Only, at one step removed… Merlin casts the form of Ygrain’s husband on Uther… So that he can sleep with her… The result is the same… Manannan gets to bring up Mongan… Merlin gets to bring up Arthur… Mongan, the story claims… Is a reincarnation of the hero, Fin Mac Coll.

The English tale is silent… As to the ancestry of Arthur… But there must be a forbear… Otherwise he would not get to be king… In the old days… Things like that were never left to chance… If there isn’t… Then it is more than the ruse… Which has been borrowed… From the Irish tale… And that would not be overly surprising… For all their depth and charm… The Arthurian stories have always felt like a transplant… They arise… As if from nowhere… And disappear again… Into the same void… Which is a pity… The awakening of Arthur’s sleeping knights… Could never be more needed… Than right now.
