Of Pachyderms and Turrets…

***

But it is not mechanical… It is natural… And nature… Is all we’ve got… Even if we include… The supernatural… Because that is nature too… Knowing this… Is half the battle… To overcoming it… Acting upon it… Is the other half… We drain our coffee… And empty the dregs… Out over the ghostly scrub… Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to mind… Then we help each other back into the train carriage via the metal plate… The wooden carriages… Are just a memory now… Like all the ghosts… We carry them around… Until they are ready… And then we give them vent… And that’s all we can do.

The train trundles off… After a few false starts… But stops again… Before too long… At Seventy-Seven… And the first album… Dennis is now John… And Chris’s surname is Cross… The long hair… Has gone… For the most part… As have the scarves… And velvet jackets… If we were to give it a belated label… It would be Glam-Punk… The songs played live… Are all a lot faster… Which is probably the only reason they got away with it… For the audiences of the time… But the lyrics are far too surreal to be proper punk… And far too cerebral as well… As a lyricist… At that time… Foxx was second to none.

The album bombed… Of course… As did the single… White boys playing reggae… Exceptionally good… If not… Downright sublime reggae… It has to be said… So, before the end of the same year… They put out another album… And because they were so angry… At the failure… Of the first… This one really was punk… Albeit superior punk… Lyrically… At least… And that bombed too… Tensions were now beginning to run high… But when Bill bumped into Billy… Years later in the Elephant and Castle… He was adamant that the early years… Really were the high point for him… Despite the later success.

We'd love to hear from you...
