Rattus Norvegicus…

***

Monkey spent five hundred years… Buried beneath a mountain… But for an immortal… Such a length of time… Is a mere gnat’s blink… Possibly… Even less… Which is useful… For it took a lot less time… For our lords and masters… To move from ardently… Promoting the national flag… To ardently denying it… The pictorial history of Spendyke… Shows this quite clearly… In Nineteen Fourteen there is a group of people outside the town hall… Surrounding the Mayor and Mayoress… Who are seated beneath… A dolmen of boards… Bearing the Union Jack… With messages like… It’s your duty lad…

***

Join today… It’s our flag… Fight for it… Work for it… A sergeant major stands behind… The august dignitaries… Next to Lord Derby… Who is sporting… A Virgil hat… And the current crop… Of duty bound young men… Stand or sit close by them… Next stop, the front… And, well death, actually… Nowadays… Unless one is a sports person… Allegiance to the national flag… Is regarded as a terrorist offence… As is working… And earning a living… Rather than relying… On state sponsored handouts… Funny how things change… Is it not?… But we really do have to start asking… Why, this should be so?

***

Quite by chance… A glorious opportunity… To start dating things more precisely… Has presented itself… The second series of Fawlty Towers… Was first broadcast… In Nineteen Seventy Nine… As memory would have it… We watched the last episode of that series… Round at Jo Cass’s house… Basil the Rat… Was the episode title… And it was broadcast on… The Twenty-Fifth of October… Wow!… How cool is that?… Isn’t it strange that in those days… Artistic endeavours… Were accorded a far greater sanctity… Than real life?… Sadly, such comic genius… Real or otherwise… Is also… No longer allowed…
