It is possible that the landmarks of… Memory… Are peaks of emotion… That is… Feelings… Which might make memory… Feminine… She was for the Greeks… In Jacko’s… Fellowship… There is a famous scene where a black rider… Almost catches the hobbits… They hide under a tree root… And distract the ghoul… Before making good their escape… On first seeing the film… It seemed that this scene was a perfect representation… Of something that happened in the book… But on re-reading the book… It turned out that this was not the case at all… There, the black rider is seen… Some distance away.

So what is happening here?… The film scene… Is visually re-creating the feeling… That the book invokes at this point… And doing it so well… That any film-goer… With only a casual familiarity… With the book… Would swear blind… That what they saw on film… Was how they remembered the scene… From reading the book… This is superlative film making… And also highlights… Some essential differences… Between thinking… And feeling… Between simply reading… By rote… And a reading experience… We might want to claim… That in the latter… We identify… With our reading matter.

It is possible… To go through life… By rote… But not advisable… We are though… Encouraged to learn by rote… And this too… Is both inadvisable… And damaging… To the soul… Which shrinks… From such tyranny… In order to experience our life… We have to live it… Which means we have to identify with it… Before we can identify with it… We have to identify it… Which leads us straight back… To psychology… The ‘It’… Or ‘Id’… Is central to this… Experience… Because it comes into the world… Not as a blank slate… But as a living seed… Yearning to grow… And develop… Into a living being.
