Drumskinney…

County Fermanagh, Wednesday 15th June, 2022…

***

***

With these ‘fellas’ as a prelude

we could be forgiven

for thinking the day was to end with a bang.

***

***

But what we got was a sort of summation.

***

***

Drumskinney has the look

and feel of a show circle

but it does confirm many of the impressions

gained from our morning sojourn at Little-Big Moor.

***

***

The stone rows are directed to the cairn

so that any procession along them

would act as a willing sacrifice of kinetic energy.

***

***

But to what or to whom?

*

The notion of pilgrimage

is still current to this day

although undertaken

with a slightly different emphasis.

***

***

The Old Ways die hard it seems.

***

***

Some of the smaller stones

are more recent inserts.

***

***

When we were growing up

‘skinny’ meant thin, or naked.

***

***

But we still do not really know

what a magical battle would actually look like?

***

***

And if the hewing, transportation,

placing, and setting of huge stones

in the landscape is so mysterious to us…

***

***

Then how much more mysterious

are the gigantic works in earth?

***
