… Ash!

***

There is one memory… Perhaps even more troubling… Than all the others… It occurs in two stages… Which opens the possibility… That it is not one memory at all… But two… Anyway… In part one of the memory we are driving down the prom… In Ash’s car… The car tape player… Is blaring out… Young Guns (Go For It)… And the windows of the car are wide open…. Because it is a sunny summers day… We pass a group of girls… Walking the opposite way… Along the prom… And one of them laughs… And waves… Still laughing… We do not know her… As we move away… Her smile remains visible.

***

Later that same day… We are in Ash’s bedroom… Playing more music… I was dreaming when I wrote this… Forgive me if it goes astray… But when I woke up this morning… Could have sworn it was judgement day… They say… Two thousand… Zero Zero… Party over… Oops… Out of sight… So tonight I’m going to party… Like its nine-teen ninety-nine… Ash… Starts to explain… That the song relates to all the computers crashing… In the year two thousand… It is the sort of thing that Ash would know… But this is nineteen-eighty-two… And when the former artist… Says… ‘They’… Who can he… Possibly mean?

***

And to whom… Pray tell… Is he apologising?… The play… On the zeros… And the ‘ohs’ of… Over… Oops… Out… And of… Is actually… Quite sublime… and was also… At that time… Out of sight… To all but Ash… At any rate… And is not something… That would have been noticed… Or commented on… Back in the day… Anyway… That particular crash never happened… So I suppose that… There is always hope… For better… Days ahead… And the girl?… The girl is still waving… And laughing… In the summer sun… She will do that… Until the end… Of time… And no one… Will ever know… Why…
