Most people will be aware that the Norse God, Thor
was a ‘God of Thunder’ who gave us the name of our fifth day of the week.
***
***
The crashes of thunder were attributed
to his huge hammer, Mjollnir,
with which he regularly set about
the giants of Jottunheim…
***
***
But what of that other component
of the thunder storm,
lightning, did the Norsemen have a god for that?
***
***
It is possible that the trickster god, Loki,
originally fulfilled this role.
***
***
In the tales Loki and Thor
often set out on adventures together
as one might expect of beings originally conceived in this way.
***
***
But surely, if Loki was lightning,
in any duel adventure, he would go on ahead,
or at least, would initially get there first?
***
***
There is at least one tale
in which this happens…

So many Norse words in our everyday life – Freya for Friday, Woden for Wednesday, anger, bait, fellow, sky, axle!
