In the canonical Gospels:
Jesus does not fall with the cross.
Jesus does not meet his mother.
Veronica does not wipe Jesus’ face with a cloth.
The pieta too also appears to be an embellishment of the gospel tradition
where Joseph of Arimathea deposes Jesus from the cross.
Simon of Cyrene does though help Jesus carry the cross.
There is also a Gnostic Gospel that insists that Simon goes on to take Jesus’ place on the cross
and is crucified in his stead.
