‘Pushing through the market square, so many mothers sighing…’
(Five Years)
*
Following the death of David Bowie on the 10th of January 2016,
a groundswell of opinion surfaced in Aylesbury
to celebrate his art in a permanent way,
in recognition of his connection with the music club, Friars.
*
Bowie debuted both ‘Hunky Dory’
and ‘Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’
at the club in the early seventies
and formed his band in the rehearsal room of the venue
formerly of Market Square, Aylesbury.
*
The full history of David Bowie and Friars, Aylesbury,
has been chronicled in
The Thin White Book, by Kris Needs.

‘Ziggy’ and ‘the Spiders…’ perform at Friars in 1972
*
On the 16th January 2016, a petition was started to celebrate
Bowie’s legacy in the form of a statue for the town.
*
Internationally renowned Buckinghamshire sculptor,
Andrew Sinclair was commissioned to create the work.
*
The statue features two main figures,
Bowie as Ziggy Stardust circa 1973,
and again in his 2003 ‘Heathen’ period.
*
*
Behind these two figures can be seen many of
the characters David portrayed throughout his long
and illustrious music career.
*
Funding is still required for this project.

The sculpture is augmented by an audio system
which plays one of Bowie’s tracks every hour
on the hour and a webcam
allowing the sculpture to be seen 24 hours a day.

The Green Man Public House
still occupies the site of the Friars music club, Aylesbury.
The alleyway to the left side
is the former entrance to the club.
lol, when I first saw the photo at the top, for a half a second I thought of a peat-offering or something, but then I recognized Bowie’s last great character, Buttoneyes (or whatever it he is called). Very cool about the sculpture. I’ll have to take a look at the video feed, since I doubt I’ll see it with my own eyes any time soon.

‘Ol’ Button Eyes’ in some sense presumably probably represents the human condition vis a vis reality… 😉
