Auchencar Standing Stone

Isle of Arran, Sunday, 30th October 2022

***

***

What keeps

one stone standing

when others fall?

*

The debris of a second stone

lies strewn around the foot of this one.

*

Together they must have made a pretty pair.

*

Were there once others whose remains

are now no longer to be seen?

***

***

From this angle the stone looks

positively ‘gnonomic’,

which may once have been its function.

*

And, or, ‘druidic’

which was definitely not.

*

Although not easy to spot

from these shots, because of the lichen growth,

the monolith is formed of red sand-stone.

*

Little did we know that we were destined to meet

some of its equally tall cousins later in the day…
