‘Golden Hours’?…

Dumfries and Galloway, Friday, 28th October, 2022…

***

***

What this monument most resembles, perhaps,

is a spindle or spinning wheel,

minus its wheel.

*

Perhaps its wheel is the sun

in which case Galdus

should be Gildus and may have been

a Scottish queen rather than a Scottish king…

***

***

There was once a wheel, though,

inscribed on one of the stones

and now housed for ‘safe-keeping’

in the National Museum of Scotland.

***

***

It was not too dissimilar to the one at the previous site.

*

Such carvings are usually described as ‘cup-and-ring’ marks,

or ‘cup-and-ring spirals, and they are legion on megalithic stones.

***

***

All of which suggests that these sites

were originally constructed to greet the rising sun.

***

***

And why not?
