Isle of Arran, Sunday, 30th October, 2022

Incredibly, there were still more circles
we had yet to see!
***
***
I am reminded of our sojourn at Callanish
on the Outer Hebridean Isle of Lewis.
***
***
And the inevitable question,
what is really going on at such sites?
***
***
They can really only sensibly be observatories.
***
***
And that level of sophisticated social
organisation is not necessarily
one which our culture is happy
about assigning to their culture.
*
More fool our culture.
***
***
This landscape without the monuments
appears, well, pretty pointless actually.
***
***
And the individual sites are too closely
packed together to represent separate factions.
***
***
Time, it is true, may be a factor…
***
***
But when factored in yields
an even greater preponderance of monuments
in the form of wooden structures now decayed.

So, it’s an Ancient Observatory,
or it’s an Ancient Stone Circle Showroom!

These photos are glorious. (K)
