King Bengali was taken from the battlefield and brought
before his victorious conqueror King Benares-the-Lame.
*
As soon as he saw that Bengali had only one eye
Benares started to laugh uncontrollably.
*
“You may laugh at my defeat,” said Bengali, “but you would do
better to reflect that may place may well have been yours.
It is God who presides over the destiny of thrones.
Man should not laugh at the manifestation of God’s will.”
*
Upon recovering himself, Benares made reply,
“It is that very thought which makes me laugh,” he said,
“God’s thrones are of little import, it seems when he hands
the kingdom of a one-eyed man to a one-legged man.”
