of the histories which were left to them.

to have original inhabitants,
they both had to be originally uninhabited
and then populated by outcasts
from the classical world or, indeed, the Christian.

Britain got Brutus,
Ireland got Cessair…

Original here just means,
‘in one’s right mind’.

The original inhabitants
of both Britain and Ireland
operated in their right mind
and then their land mass was invaded
by brutes and their world changed for the worse.
