The picture hung on the wall directly opposite the door.
When the door was opened it was immediately seen.
The picture showed the likeness of a young and beautiful maiden.
It was so exquisitely painted that it looked like the maiden lived, and breathed, and moved.
“Who is she?” said the young king upon entering the room at the end of the long corridor.
“She is, ‘The Princess of the Golden Roof’,” said Trusty John, reading the ornate, gold-leaf, script at the base of the picture frame.
“If all the leaves on all the trees in the world had tongues,” said the young king, “they would be incapable of expressing my love for her,” he continued, “My life now depends on winning her!”
“A curse has fallen upon us,” groaned Trusty John, “It was just as your father predicted. I have failed both him and you.” …
