Half-Blood Brood…

***

In the English College of Arms… Heralds Office… Is a pedigree of Christ… In chart and narrative form… Roll thirty-three… Box twenty-six… Concerns… St Ann and her sister Bianca… St Ann… It transpires… Had three husbands!… Firstly… Joachim by whom she conceived… The Virgin Mary… Secondly… Cleophas… By whom she conceived… Another Mary… Who was the mother… Of St James the Less… St Simon… St Jude… And Joseph Barsaba… Thirdly… Salome… By whom she conceived… Yet another Mary… Who married Zebedee… And was the mother of… St John the Divine… And St James the Great.

***

To wit… We may conclude… That if one wants to… Invent a new religion… It’s advisable… To keep it in the family!… What woman… In her right mind… Calls all her female offspring… By the same name?… It is… To say the least… Highly unlikely… And thus highly questionable… So what… Is it doing… In the Rolls… Of the English College of Arms?… So much for the chart… Yet, the accompanying narrative… Records… A slightly different pedigree… Whereby… It is St Mary… Who marries Cleophas… After the death of St Joseph… So, which ‘account’ was fiddled with… Chart… Or narrative… Or both?

***

We need not proceed… Too much further with this… To be assured that… Contrivance… And construction… Be afoot… In large measure… Suffice it to say… That there are other manuscripts… Held in the archives… Of our most famous… Seats of learning… Which purport… To show marriages… Between august… British Kings… And what might be termed…The Scions of Jesse… Is it not odd enough… That a Hebrew Rabbi… Should institute… A gentile religion… Without his family… Consorting… With Greeks… And Romans… And Britons?… Yet, this is what we are asked to believe.
